Jose and Melinda’s Wedding Day

I’ve gone to a lot of weddings. But Jose and Melinda’s wedding day in Rock Island on May 10 was a mix of traditional and yet unconventional in many ways, as well as a great deal of emotion hard for even an onlooker to keep bottled in. For me there are a few moments that stick out the most.

It was no surprise to me that Jose and Melinda looked incredible. But seeing them with a huge rosary at the alter was striking in its beauty and simplicity.

After the ceremony, it was onto a party bus with the couple’s huge bridal party (20 people total!)

Before heading to the reception, the newlyweds, the bridal party and close family members and friends stopped at the cemetery where a mariachi band was playing at the burial site of Jose’s twin brother, who died last year of cancer. Through tears, music, drinking, and even some dancing, Jose, Melinda and their loved ones remembered, honored and celebrated the life of a someone whose presence was greatly missed that day.

At the reception, more tears and more laughter. And finally, the newlyweds get to cut the cake. “Heh, heh,” Jose is thinking. “Do I cram the cake on her face or don’t I?” Either way, it was definitely an unforgettable wedding day for them both and the beginning of what I hope will be a long and happy life.
