March for Babies 2009

I never thought I’d get such a workout from a charity event, especially one I’d been to before. But I was among more than (at least) 250 walkers who came to Veterans Memorial Park in Bettendorf this past weekend for the annual March for Babies walk. Teams ranged in size from a handful to dozens. Many proudly wore team shirts, and a parade of children who were born as preemies walked across the stage for a Miracle Walk before the official 3.5-mile walk began through the Duck Creek bike path.

We were blessed with good weather – rain was previously predicted in the forecast – and everyone took to the bike path. Many of us paused to read the markers of the babies whose lives were in danger within seconds of birth. To look at them now on the path, one would never guess the tense weeks and months their families went through.

In all, about $100,000 was raised from this event. Nationwide, 1 million people participate in March for Babies walks each year to help support local community programs in assisting moms have healthy full-term pregnancies.
