A Little “Peace” of Heaven ~ Previewing the Next 7 Days

I decided a few weeks ago that I would share some personal accounts of my life as a Peace Corps volunteer in the South American country of Suriname, from 2004-06.

This didn’t come out of the blue. Instead, it’s my way of participating in Peace Corps Week, March 1-7, to celebrate the organization’s Third Goal. This is simply volunteers sharing their experiences to “strengthen Americans’ understanding about the world and its peoples.” (JFK’s words).

So for the next 7 days I’ve put together a series of posts chronicling a small part of my Peace Corps life. Each day is an excerpt of select personal emails I wrote my family and friends, intermixed with photos I took or taken of me.

Although the blog series represents about 2 percent of my volunteer life, I hope it gives you a glimpse into an unpredictable, but rewarding experience for many who dedicate two years to Peace Corps service.

This blog series also is registered with Peace Corps headquarters to document volunteers’ participation of the Third Goal, and subsequently serves as a small part in helping advocate for continued funding.

Compiling this series has been a labor of love, and unearthed a flood of memories as I combed through old emails and photos to find a unique mix of content. So for the next 7 days get ready for an experience inside A Little “Peace” of Heaven I once called home.
