Melissa & Shawn ~ Davenport, Iowa Wedding

After nearly 11 years together, Melissa and Shawn married on Saturday, and then invited a couple hundred friends to celebrate in a Hawaiian-themed reception. But there’s more to this union than meets the eye. This couple has conquered and persevered in more ways than most. And everyone who knows them will tell you they deserve all the happiness in the world. Why? Because they get each other, and have for more than a decade. And there’s no stopping them.

It’s easy to get caught up in the hoopla about what a wedding should look like. But theirs was incredibly original and fun. For starters, Melissa and Shawn love music and concerts, and morphed that into a concert ticket for their wedding invitation. How cool is that!

Instead of rice, Melissa’s mom raised some butterflies which were stuffed into the transparent envelopes to be released after the ceremony.

The ceremony was scheduled near the Rose Garden at Vander Veer Park, where Shawn arrived ready to go… and show off his rockin’ shoes, as he and everyone else kept eyeing the sky.

More than a half hour before the ceremony it started sprinkling. Melissa’s sister told her it would stop, and it did. Then about 10 minutes prior to the ceremony there was a downpour. It soon came to a stop as the bridal party took their places. Included were the couple’s kids, Sergio and McKenzey. Shortly thereafter Melissa followed.

The family did a sand ceremony, during which the sun made its appearance as the couple expressed their solemn vows and became husband and wife.

Then it was time for the butterflies to be released. They were a little slow to launch out in the world, but seemed to want to be part of the celebration. One decided to hang out on Melissa’s bouquet for a while.

After the ceremony and some very quick formals, Melissa and Shawn hung out for some photos of themselves – their first as… newlyweds.

Now time to party. Tropical style. This is a glimpse of the decor at the reception, held at Club Mo-Kan.

Before the party started it was time to cut the cake, and witness a part of the cake-smashing festivities. Can you feel the love (and the cake) in these? 🙂

Melissa and Shawn are planning on a trip to Hawaii this fall. I wish I was going … but I can’t complain. I’ll be offline for a few days as Scott and I leave for some much needed days of non-thinking and relaxation at Wisconsin Dells.

Until then,
